Welcome to the first edition of our Monthly Newsletter. This initiative is aimed at bringing together our activities and achievements on a monthly basis and communicating these to the bigger TGS family. It will also be used to bring the team at India to speed with the global initiatives and achievements of our company and give them a global vision of the industry trends on the whole.
I became a part of this family sometime back. I came on board of TACT on March 5th, 2007 and after working for more than a month, the creativity, dedication & belongingness of TEAM TGS towards the organization forced me to make it visible to the outer world, the entire HMNA Team. This newsletter will serve as a vehicle to facilitate that communication. And of course the joy of Creativity! Probably, that’s what motivated me to start this.
This is a collaborative effort and a synergistic outcome of many great minds at TGS, Bangalore – IN. For the publication of this newsletter I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the entire Team India, “The Team TGS” - I thank them for their support to me and appreciate their drive and enthusiasm.
I am also grateful to Baba Bedi for his constant support, his leadership and vision and appreciate his suggestions, encouragement and guidance.
I would like to dedicate this inaugural edition to our CEO Mr. Shmuel BenTov, and ask his support in taking this forward and making it more effective.
With a motto – “Interdependence is higher value than Independence…”, I invite feedback on this effort which will help us in making it a more powerful tool for collaboration and co-operation.
Happy reading…
Sanjay Singh

Introduction of the New - 360 degree appraisal policy
HR team has implemented the 360 degree appraisal policy for the current financial year. 360-degree feedback is employee development feedback that comes from all around the employee. The feedback would come from subordinates, peers and managers in the organizational hierarchy, as well as a self-assessment, and in some cases external sources such as customers and suppliers or other interested stakeholders.
It helps uncover hidden areas of strengths of individuals, inspires people to take ownership of their learning and development, increases the self awareness levels of individuals, understand how their behavior influences both their own personal effectiveness and how they impact the smooth running of the organization, communication within the organization and encourages a more open culturewhere giving and receiving constructive feedback is the norm, powerful driver for change both for individuals and organizations as a whole. |

Reliance Life sciences
It’s a Clinical domain project and the tool being used is Oracle Clinical which is quite similar to eRT’s EDM.
We are using a tool called CAVS (Computer Aided Validation System) to Execute the scripts. This tool is actually Test Script writing, Execution and manages scripts and can provide reports about validation. It is developed and maintained by an organization called CSS.
Oracle Clinical is like eDM where we create Program’s Protocol, Create Metadata, Codelist, Modules, Write Edit Checks etc. It has all the features that we are using in eRT.

Styles of Leadership - Do you "see the light" ...? |
|
| |
 |
|
Leadership is thought of as a single skill. Is it really so? Many feel that leadership skill is something which you either have or don’t have, but in reality leadership skill is something that can be acquired and developed.
When we look at some of the great leaders from history, sport, and our own lives; we see some strategists, others visionaries, and a few others who are great motivators. What about our parent as a leader – their role as multi-tasking, nursing, peace making, admonishing; several facets of leadership, each suited to different situations.
Let ’s look at our work arena as the offshore arm of HMNA.
At the starting point
Three styles of leadership are required at the outset of a project. The visionary must cast the vision and encourage his followers to stop what they are doing and focus on the new task. The entrepreneur will have the determination to give the project momentum and turn the idea into reality, ideally with the help of the strategist who will have already broken the big picture down into manageable chunks.
Along the way.
Along the way as critical decisions need to be made, it will be the directional leader who decides with certainty what is it that is to be done. It is not just change for the sake of change, in the hope that something will work and that the team will come out looking good.
The team maker who will instinctively gather all the people with the necessary skills, and move forward on the project, plays a critical role. This leader is a good judge of character, and will also have an intuitive understanding of the strengths that already exist within the team, ensuring that imbalances are compensated by suitable new additions. Keeping the program on track will be the monitor, all too often this skill is overlooked because those that possess it don't have the charismatic approach associated with leadership. They play a key role in setting milestones and ensuring that everyone is moving in the same direction and at the same pace.
Keeping the team energized is the role of the motivator and the guide. The motivator sets goals, gives incentives and celebrates achievement while the guide focuses on the individual's welfare. In this results based world the guide is often seen as a hindrance to getting the job done but ask those who work for these leaders and there you will see their motivation to achieve the task on time and to standard is way higher than others.
When the chips are down.
We all know of stories where a leader has taken on a failing organization and turned it around. These change leaders thrive on taking teams apart and putting them back together again. With the benefit of experience elsewhere they can see where an organization is going wrong and know exactly how to put it right. Once this is achieved though they may not have the skills to maintain the momentum and cast a vision for the future, like the entrepreneur they will be hungry to start a new challenge.
When you are in a “wow” situation.
The vision has become reality and brought with it several new visions. Now, the danger is that each will follow its own course rather than supporting the others. The consolidator will have spotted this and will know how to listen, arbitrate, negotiate, compromise and relate to a large cross section of people to steer each of them towards a common goal without detracting from their individual missions.
Now, think back to past leaders you have served and identify which of the ten styles they demonstrated and in what environment. Compare them to your own situation and consider which aspect of your leadership style you need to develop.
Let us “see the light” and have our future actions be guided by the vision that emerges.

Helios and Matheson eyes buys in US, UK
TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 2007 ]
HYDERABAD: Helios and Matheson Information Technology (HMIT), an IT services firm in the healthcare vertical, is gearing up for acquisitions in Europe and the US. The company is looking at a deal in the range of $50 million to $100 million as part of its strategy to fill gaps in geographical presence and technology. It is also planning to set up an offshore centre in Coimbatore at an investment of Rs 35 crore.
“We are mainly targeting companies which have operations in Europe. This will help us get a strong foothold there. Our aim is to later shift operations of the acquired companies to India as it will help us take advantage of a cost effective destination,” said G K Muralikrishna, managing director of HMIT.
Globally the healthcare market is growing at 12%, he said. “Studies also suggest that offshoring constitutes only 6% of the total IT spend of a company. That shows the huge market potential that exists,” he said.
“We are looking at enhancing our presence in Europe where the healthcare segment is growing rapidly. Though we have not finalised any companies, the deal size will be in the range of $50 million to $100 million,” he said. |

IT Cos see potential in healthcare, pharma biz
TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2007
NEW YORK: The global healthcare industry is under pressure to reduce research and administrative costs and meet tighter compliance and security mandates in Europe and in the US.
As margins remain under pressure, pharma companies, health insurance players and health maintenance organisations (HMOs) are looking at alternatives to cut costs and meet the rules mandated by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “Healthcare organisations outsource less than 10% of their IT budget,” said K Muralikrishna, managing director of Helios and Matheson, a Chennai-based information technology company.
The market has thus begun to represent an outsourcing opportunity for IT players.
“The global healthcare IT outsourcing market is estimated at around $80 billion and is growing by 12% every year,” said Mr Muralikrishna. “Automation in the industry is extremely low. As pressure from consumers increases, players will need to outsource an increasing share of their IT budget. With costs six to seven times lower than in the US, Indian IT companies stand to benefit from this opportunity,“ he said.
The pharmaceutical and healthcare industries in the US are going through a period of turbulence. The attempt is to replace the traditional blockbuster model of drug development with a new one that enables it to develop safer, more efficacious drugs. There is a huge struggle to cope with rapidly rising costs, inconsistent delivery and inadequate access in many countries.
These pressures have often lead the two industries to work closer, to realise the value of the information they collect and provide better products and services. New technologies could play a major role in enabling this convergence. Common data standards and security-rich systems capable of preserving the confidentiality of personal data will be essential to achieve this, say industry analysts.
To build a strong customer base, Helios and Matheson has completed four acquisitions in the last five years. Last year, it bought a controlling 43% stake in The A Consulting Team Inc., NY, USA (Nasdaq Capital Market: TACX) in an all cash deal at $8.75 million —or 0.8 times sales. The cash deal had an additional earn-out component to the promoter, Shmuel BenTov, structured as a percentage of profits achieved over a two year-period ending March 2008.
“This acquisition has allowed us to add to our list of customers,” said Mr Muralikrishna. Helios & Matheson clients now notably include the world’s largest pharma company Pfizer and Delta Healthcare. “We hope to be able to improve margins by farming out activities to India,” he added.
“However, most jobs being farmed out to India are still mainly low-end jobs,” added Helios & Matheson North America CEO Schmuel BenTov. “Employees in the US were very apprehensive initially as most people perception of India in the US remains that of a poor country. But mentalities are changing, and employees feel that by improving overall margins this could also mean better bonuses for higher end jobs.”
Convincing customers has not proved easy either. “We offer the option to our customers not to use outsourcing services, which is clearly mentioned in the contract. The price though is naturally significantly higher,” explained Mr BenTov. |
