Welcome to the annual edition of the "Expressions" Newsletter. We completed one year with this communiqué and saw it evolve as a vehicle of communication and collaboration.
The first quarter for 2008 concluded at a successful note setting the right pace for the year ahead. Michael Prude, Baba Bedi and Kumar visited HMGS Bangalore in the month of March. Their visit helped in reaffirming the vision of one large global team and infused renewed jest in the team here. March was full of events and celebrations. The festival of Holi was celebrated with great flavor and colorful spirit.
We had three new additions to our HMGS family. Siva K. Konda and Aman Sachan joined the QA team and Siva Prasad joined the VBA team this month. Welcome aboard !
This month also witnessed success on the front of project deliveries. The VBA Team, lead by Vasu, deserves a special mention for the successful delivery of LARIX Project to eRT. I would also like to congratulate Vandana and her team for the timely delivery of Mellon: EOS Prototype. Congratulations folks !!! And keep up the good work.
As always, feedbacks from readers are most welcome.
Happy Reading...

Time Management at Work – How to Manage Time in the Workplace:
|
|
Time management at work is an essential skill to master if you want to become more efficient and experience less stress in the workplace. Being able to apply good time management at work can help you achieve more in a day.
Organizing your daily schedule can also help in giving you more control over the use of your time and energy in doing the different tasks. This will help to lessen the stress brought about by meeting deadlines and the pile-up of different tasks that still need to be done.
In today's workplace, time seems to be in short supply. And in a very busy workplace, an employee confronted with an increasing number of tasks required to be done on a daily basis can be very stressful. However, no task is insurmountable if you only know how to apply good time management at work.
Managing time need not be that difficult. What it requires is constant practice on a daily basis. Making time management a habit can work wonders. You easily realize just how much work can be accomplished with good time management. Doing so might even leave you with some time left to relax and let it all hang out.
One of the most important tips in practicing good time management is by learning how to organize. Good organizational skills allow you to learn how not to get lost over tasks. Good organizational skills also require you to know how to prioritize. With good organization, less time is spent on keeping track of work, and energies are kept focused more at accomplishing the different tasks.
A good way of organizing everything at the workplace is by practicing the art of making lists. Listing tasks on paper can help make you see what needs to be done. Add to that task list their corresponding deadlines and you may be able to see what tasks need to be prioritized.
Committing everything to memory would not always be dependable. Forgetting a certain task is easy without a task list on hand to remind you of what you need to do. Poor time management at work is failing to put what you need to do on paper. Making a habit of making lists at work is a simple yet valuable time management step.

iflex to become history
Company to become a vital cog in Oracle's gameplan
SAN FRANCISCO, USA: iflex could soon become history. But iflex would continue to live and even thrive, thanks to its transformation as Oracle’s Financial Services Global Business Unit (FSGBU) earlier this year in New York.
Speaking at the Oracle Industry Leaders Media Roundtable at the sidelines of Oracle OpenWorld, Rajesh Hukku, head, FSGBU and chairman, iflex, hinted that the iflex brand would probably be subsumed by the stronger Oracle brand in the near future.
“Though brand change is a marketing decision, ultimately it makes sense to maintain the bigger umbrella brand. However, individual iflex product brands like Flexcube, Revelus and others would continue to exist,” informed Hukku, currently running Oracle FSGBU based out of New York.
This is in line with Oracle’s standard policy where strong product brands like Siebel, Hyperion continue to exist even after coming under the Oracle umbrella.

The next wave in telecom
Though the telecom industry is still witnessing growth in the metros, it is rural India that has become a hotspot for Service Providers…
BANGALORE, INDIA: : For too long, mobile companies have ignored the Indian rural hinterland. Since 1995, when mobile telephony came into the country, all the mobile operators have been going hammer and tongs on the big metros.
After tapping the urban India with their operations, service providers are now looking at expanding connectivity in rural areas as a prime focus. The next big wave in the telecommunications industry is reaching the rural mass. The reason? Well, commerce again.
The big metros are saturated and there is more or less stagnant growth in terms of absolute volumes. Little wonder, service providers as well as infrastructure provider started taking bold initiatives to tap rural market.
A head start
Bharti Airtel has announced that it will collaborate with the Gujarat government in the prestigious eGRAM Connectivity Infrastructure Project. Under this project, Bharti Airtel will set up telecom infrastructure to connect 13,716 village panchayats and common service centers in the state.
Once connected, the panchayat offices/eGRAMs are expected to form a socio-economic network supporting information dissemination and facilitating e-Governance initiatives in the state.
Commenting on this significant partnership, Manoj Kohli, president & CEO, Bharti Airtel says, "It is a great opportunity to partner with the Gujarat government in the innovative and novel project of empowering its citizens. This partnership reiterates Airtel's endeavor to collaborate with the government's e-Governance plans and efforts to bridge the "digital divide" by providing connectivity to the rural masses. The e-enabling of the state is an important step as the country moves into the next phase of economic growth."

Festival of Colors - Holi |
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
One of the major festivals of India, Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is the month of March as per the Gregorian calendar.
Holi festival may be celebrated with various names and people of different states might be following different traditions. But, what makes Holi so unique and special is the spirit of it which remains the same throughout the country and even across the globe, wherever it is celebrated.
Preparations
Entire country wears a festive look when it is time for Holi celebration. Market places get abuzz with activity as frenzied shoppers start making preparations for the festival. Heaps of various hues of gulal and abeer can be seen on the roadside days before the festival. Pichkaris in innovative and modern design too come up every year to lure the children who wish to collect them as Holi memorabilia and of course, to drench everybody in the town.
Womenfolk too start making early preparations for the holi festival as they cook loads of gujiya, mathri and papri for the family and also for the relatives. At some places specially in the north women also make papads and potato chips at this time.
Season of Bloom
Everybody gets delighted at the arrival of Holi as the season itself is so gay. Holi is also called the Spring Festival - as it marks the arrival of spring the season of hope and joy. The gloom of the winter goes as Holi promises of bright summer days. Nature too, it seems rejoices at the arrival of Holi and wears its best clothes. Fields get filled with crops promising a good harvest to the farmers and flowers bloom colouring the surroundings and filling fragrance in the air.
Legends
A Hindu festival, Holi has various legends associated with it. The foremost is the legend of demon King Hiranyakashyap who demanded everybody in his kingdom to worship him but his pious son, Prahlad became a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap wanted his son to be killed. He asked his sister Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap as Holika had a boon which made he immune to fire. Story goes that Prahlad was saved by lord himself for his extreme devotion and evil minded Holika was burnt to ashes, for her boon worked only when she entered the fire alone.
Since that time, people light a bonfire, called Holika on the eve of Holi festival and celebrate the victory of good over evil and also the triumph of devotion to god. Children take special delight in the tradition and this has another legend attached to it. It says that there was once an ogress Dhundhi who used to trouble children in the kingdom of Prithu. She was chased away by children on the day of Holi. Therefore, children are allowed to play pranks at the time of 'Holika Dahan'.
Some also celebrate the death of evil minded Pootana. The ogress tried to Lord Krishna as an infant by feeding it poisonous milk while executing the plan of Kansa, Krishna's devil uncle. However, Krishna sucked her blood and brought her end. Some who view the origin of festivals from seasonal cycles believe that Pootana represents winter and her death the cessation and end of winter.
In South India, people worship Kaamadeva- the god of love and passion for his extreme sacrifice. According to a legend, Kaamadeva shot his powerful love arrow on Lord Shiva to revoke his interest in the worldly affairs in the interest of the earth. However, Lord Shiva was enraged as he was in deep mediation and opened his third eye which reduced Kaamadeva to ashes. Though, later on the request of Rati, Kaamadeva's wife, Shiva was pleased to restore him back.
Holika Dahan
On the eve of Holi, called Chhoti or Small Holi people gather at important crossroads and light huge bonfires, the ceremony is called Holika Dahan. This tradition is also followed in Gujarat and Orissa. To render greatfulness to Agni, god of Fire, gram and stalks from the harvest are also offered to Agni with all humility. Ash left from this bonfire is also considered sacred and people apply it on their foreheads. People believe that the ash protects them from evil forces.
Play of Colors
Great excitement can be seen in people on the next day when it is actually the time for the play of colours. Shops and offices remain closed for the day and people get all the time to get crazy and whacky. Bright colours of gulal and abeer fill the air and people take turns in pouring colour water over each other. Children take special delight in spraying colours on one another with their pichkaris and throwing water balloons and passers by. Women and senior citizen form groups called tolis and move in colonies - applying colours and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance on the rhythm of dholak and mouthwatering Holi delicacies are the other highlights of the day.
Expression of Love
Lovers too long to apply colours on their beloved. This has a popular legend behind it. It is said that the naughty and mischievous Lord Krishna started the trend of playing colours. He applied colour on her beloved Radha to make her one like him. The trend soon gained popularity amongst the masses. No wonder, there is no match to the Holi of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana - the places associated with the birth and childhood of Radha and Krishna.
Ecstasy of Bhang
There is also a tradition of consuming the very intoxicating bhang on this day to further enhance the spirit of Holi. It is so much fun to watch the otherwise sober people making a clown of themselves in full public display. Some, however, take bhang in excess and spoil the spirit. Caution should therefore be taken while consuming bhang delicacies.
Sober Evening
After a funfilled and exciting day, the evenings the spent in sobriety when people meet friends and relatives and exchange sweets and festive greetings.
It is said the spirit of Holi encourages the feeling of brotherhood in society and even the enemies turn friend on this day. People of all communities and even religions participate in this joyous and colouful festival and strenthen the secular fabric of the nation.
