Month of October was full of fun and fair. We celebrated Dussehra here at TACT, a popular Indian festival marked by prayers and festive celebrations.

On business front, we added to our project portfolio with Mellon EOS Redesign: Test Case documentation work coming to India. This is being done under the leadership of Jeetesh Khatwani from NJ office. Gen-Prob project started for eRT and the existing projects continued to make progress as per the plan. We applied for five Business Visa with US Consulate and got approval for all.

My special thanks to Sudhir for his timely help in Mellon EOS Redesign: Test Case documentation !!!

We continue to drive excellence in all our endeavors and would ask Helios & Matheson NA, NJ and NY to route more projects to us. We will continue to improve our efficiency and utilize our bandwidth for implementing and delivering these solutions to our esteemed clientele. We look forward to new challenges and firmly believe that Impossibilities are merely things which we have not yet learned.

Know your work place

Know your company

Be well-informed about the company you work for.

You may be joining a reputed company. However there will always be a culture and history to build on. Know the history behind your new company.

Most importantly, understand your company's vision and what it aspires to be in this industry.

This means that you will have to get an understanding of the greater landscape. What is the competition your company faces? Who are the competitors? What are the challenges faced by your new company? What are the industry trends?

Surf the Internet and read all the reference material available. Read industry reports available on the company. Visit the company's web site and study it in detail. Reading through trade publications and speaking to tenured employees is also a great source of information.

Read any books that may have been written by current or former executives of the company.

Know your job profile

Try and understand the main responsibilities of your job. Don't stick with the mentality of 'I will eventually find out'.

Old employees tend to feel insecure when someone new comes in. Be sure you understand where your duties end and someone else's begins or otherwise you would be stepping on other people's toes.

How do you learn about the role? Ask for the 'job description' document that clearly defines what is expected of you in a certain role. This will be available with the HR team of your company. You can also discuss it at length with your new boss.

Understand the office culture

An organization’s culture and systems make up its politics and account for why some places are more conducive to a work environment than others.

Learn how employees in the new company operate, as it may be different from what you're used to. Observe and ask questions first before initiating any change.

Never feel pressured to make quick decisions. You can always say, "I'll get back to you", instead of taking rash decisions that you may regret.

Get to know new colleagues

Some employees in your new company may be jealous that you have landed the position they wanted. Others may be apprehensive that you're going to make changes that may threaten their jobs.

Listen and observe. Take note of your co-workers' interests and skills, as well as their comments about office politics, departmental dynamics and problems. This will help you understand their basic natures and attitude towards work.

Share a coffee break and lunch with your colleagues. Participate in office functions. Don't be aloof and arrogant. Be good-natured and willing to offer help or guidance to colleagues.

Stick to your word and deliver the expected results. Use "we" more often than "I" when you address colleagues/bosses/subordinates.

Be a go-getter at work

Find solutions, not problems.

Nobody respects people who whine or crib. Keep your personal opinion to yourself. When the management is aware of a problem, they will look for someone who can come up with a solution rather than a whiner.

When you present a problem to your boss, offer some solutions too. Present various scenarios to him that will resolve the issue. Once you both debate and discuss the pros and cons of each, you can come up with a solution.

Accept responsibility

Responsibility is a reflection of your ability. The greater the responsibility you accept, the faster your growth will be in the organization.

But, in your eagerness to make a good impression, don't take on tasks that you cannot fully comprehend, or cannot make the time for.

If you'd like to become involved or initiate changes, planning is mandatory. Make good use of your free time at work to indulge in self-improvement activities like reading a work-related book, doing research or having a discussion with a senior colleague.

Learn to manage your time well.

Don't shirk responsibility if you mess up. If you make a mistake, own it up and don't offer excuses. And please don't pass the buck.

Seek the advice of others if you can't fix something yourself.

Don't make your private life public

Your colleagues don't need to know about personal attributes or details about your family. What you do in your private time should be just your business. As far as possible, phone calls to your friends or significant other should always be made in private.

With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can establish yourself as a valuable resource in the new organization. Good luck!

Play your cards right

Don't start discussing your resignation with your colleagues and friends. Your boss MUST be the first to know.

Or else, the gossip factory will make sure that your boss gets to know and you will end up spoiling your relationship with him/her.

So how you tell the boss about your decision? Certainly not be fax or email. Your must hand over your resignation in person.

Set up an appointment to discuss the resignation and carry an official letter of resignation to the meeting.

Writing the resignation letter

This document is a whole lot more than just a professional requirement; it is often stored by the human resource department. If you need a professional reference or plan to join the company back later, your letter can be a decisive factor.

1. Make sure it looks good

Use good quality paper and ink (if you are handwriting it) and limit it to about 200-250 words. Mention your name and department at the bottom along with your signature.

2. Be specific

In the first couple of lines, make it clear that you are resigning. Don't beat around the bush or threaten. A letter is not a negotiation tool.

3. Say something nice

Be sure to appreciate your boss and colleagues (even if you love the fact that you are leaving them). You never know: they may want to hire you back someday, at a better salary and responsibility.

4. Highlight your accomplishments

Say something like: "I thoroughly enjoyed implementing XYZ project or selling the company's product or services". Remind them of your achievements without sounding too self-centered.

5. Mention a specific date of departure

If you are leaving for further studies, it is safe to mention that. But, if leaving for another job, do not mention the name of your new employer.

When done, proofread it for errors.

The inevitable notice period

NEVER quit a day before you plan to join a new organization. The normal corporate standard is about two to three weeks. Do adhere to this standard no matter how informal the culture is in your organization or no matter how obvious your exit is. It is considered very unprofessional to leave on impulse and the word will spread around and will haunt you even in your new job.

If your employment contract is such that you have to serve a longer notice period like 45 days to three months and you can't stay too long, here is what you can do.

• See if your new employer is willing to buy out the notice period ie compensate monetarily for what you may have to pay to your current organization for not serving the long notice.

• If you have some leave, then speak to the human resource team and get it adjusted against your notice period.

• Negotiate with your boss if you can work over the weekends to finish that pending assignment so that you are able to leave faster.

When serving your notice period, don't absolve yourself of all responsibility. Finish all pending work and duties assigned. Be diligent.

And, don't steal any data or information. Never handicap the organization or your department in any way. Don't sabotage or delete any documents.

Make sure that you are not taking any vital data with you. This is indeed a stupid move to make. Leave the organization with some dignity and don't play it cheap.

If you have to train your replacement, then do it with full sincerity. What you do in your final days will have some bearing on your career. For instance, you may come across the same person sometime in the future. So you better make them comfortable and ensure that they have a smooth transition.

A practical tip: Make sure that you clean up your desk. Shred all the unwanted documents and files and handover the rest to your replacement or boss.

Leaving your desk untidy is disrespectful and will leave a sour taste within the organization. You want people to miss you behind your back and not curse you for the mess that you have left behind.

The exit interview

Many companies conduct exit interviews which are used to gain clues about employee satisfaction and to improve retention.

They may even make you a counter offer as a last attempt to make you stay. Here is what you must know about exit interviews.

• It is NOT an outlet to vent your frustration about the boss, company policies, or the inadequate salary. If you had a bad experience, forget it and move on.

• Never negotiate during an exit interview or otherwise your resignation will come across as just a gimmick to gain a salary raise or promotion.

• Keep the discussion non-controversial and stick to facts. Make sure that you do not have any emotional outbursts.

• Do offer some suggestions and feedback on how the organization can become more competitive and improve its products/services.

It's time to say goodbye!

Once people learn about your resignation in the organization, they will all be curious to know 'why' and will want to sympathies with you. It is crucial to keep your mouth shut after you have called it quits.

Don't trust anybody with important or negative information. Be graceful and relax while other people do the talking.

After serving your notice period, thank EVERYONE and make a positive exit.

Dussehra

Introduction

The festival of Dussehra is an important celebration in many parts of the country. It is celebrated with great fanfare in most parts of North India, Mysore and in the form of Durga Puja in West Bengal.

Dussehra is a very popular Hindu festival, which marks the defeat of Ravana by Lord Rama. Dussehra also symbolises the triumph of warrior Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura.

The 'Ramlila' - an enactment of the life of Lord Rama, is held during the nine days preceding Dussehra. On the tenth day (Dussehra or Vijay Dasami), larger than life effigies of Ravana, his son and brother - Meghnadh and Kumbhakarna are set to fire.

The theatrical enactment of this dramatic encounter is held throughout the country in which every section of people participates enthusiastically.

In burning the effigies the people are asked to burn the evil within them, and thus follow the path of truth and goodness, bearing in mind the instance of Ravana, who despite all his might and majesty was destroyed for his evil ways.

Legends

Dussehra is also known as Vijaya Dasami, because of the victory of Ram over Ravana. On this day in Satya Yug, Ram (the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu), killed the great demon and king of Lanka, Ravana.

Puranas also opined that in this day warrior Goddess Durga defeated and killed the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

Rituals

Worship of the Goddess is the oldest tradition, signifying the female deity's supremacy over the male Gods who are unable to destroy the demon.

The worship of Durga Mata has also social implications. As Goddess of war, she is a particular favourite of the Kshatriyas, the warrior caste, once constituting the ruling elite and aristocracy.

During this time people decorate the entrance of their houses with torans, and flower studded strings. The leaves of the Apta tree are collected and exchanged among friends and relatives as gold.

Dussehra Puja in India varies from place to place and is influenced by local myth and religious beliefs.

The festival is also celebrated with intense fervour and zest, in West Bengal. The vibrant festivities last for ten days, of which nine nights are spent in worship, 'Navaratri'. The tenth day is devoted to the worship of goddess Durga, who occupies a special position in the Hindu pantheon of gods and goddesses. She is 'Shakti', the cosmic energy that animates all beings. Beautiful idols of the Mother Goddess are worshipped in elaborate pandals for nine days, and on the ninth day, these are carried out in procession for immersion (visarjan) in a river or pond.

Celebrations

In Himachal Pradesh, a week long fair in the hill town of Kullu, is part of the Dussehra celebrations. From the little temples in the hills, deities are brought in procession to the 'maidan' in Kullu, to pay homage to the reigning deity, Raghunathji. The celebration actually begins nearly 10 days in advance as per tradition.

In Mysore, Karnataka the Mysore palace is illuminated for a whole month during Dussehra and caparisoned elephants lead a colourful procession through the gaily-decorated streets of the city. It is the most colourful celebration of Dussehra in world. The spectacular procession taken out on this day is really enjoyable.

In Tamil Nadu, the first three days are dedicated to the worship of Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity, the next three days to Saraswati, Goddess of learning and arts and the last three days to Shakti (Durga).

In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, families arrange dolls (Bommai Kolu) on artificially constructed steps and prepare an elaborate spread of lamps and flowers. Women traditionally exchange gifts of coconuts, clothes and sweets.

The whole set up is put on the very first day of Navaratri. Vijaya Dashamiy is an auspicious occasion for children to commence their education in classical dance and music, and to pay homage to their teachers.

In Punjab, Navaratri is taken as a period of fasting. In Gujarat, the evenings and nights are occasions for the fascinating Garba dance. The women dance around an earthen lamp while singing devotional songs accompanied by rhythmic clapping of hands.

In northern India, the festival wears the colourful garb of Ramlila wherein various incidents from Rama's life are enacted. Ramlila draws large number of people every year. The entire night of Dussehra passes in an enthusiastic and enchanting fair like ambience and people enjoy every bit of it. After Dussehra, the excitement of the Diwali grips the whole of India.
